16 February 2012

Dear Parents, Caregivers, Family and Friends

I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s mufti day. Remember that we would like your child to feature their house colour in what they wear. There will be no assembly as the children will all be involved in tabloid sports. You are welcome to come along and watch the fun.

LAST WEEK’S AWARDS

Logan – making a good start at St Mary’s, being a helpful & keen in class.

Ashantè – A1 Quality – effort and presentation in language.

Lydia – Excellence in swimming lessons.

Solomon –taking pride in all of his work.

Zac V – for settling in extremely well to his new class and school and sharing thoughtful ideas during class.

ASH WEDNESDAY

A number of Y3-8 children will be involved in the Cluster Swimming Sports so we are having our Prayerful Celebration to fit in with these.

SCOTCH BROTH

We are looking forward to a performance by this group this afternoon. We are lucky that they have a connection with Holleigh's grandmother so there will be no cost for these International Performers.

LOST PROPERTY

We still have a bin full of sports shoes and a number of unnamed polo fleeces in our Lost Property Box. We will be looking to give them away to a good home if they are not claimed by the end of next week.

GIRLS WINTER TUNICS

The order for this year will be placed soon.  If your daughter will need a new winter dress this year please come to the office to see Lisa so that we know what size you need and how many to order.  You do not need to pay now – just place your order so that you do not miss out.

YOUR HELP NEEDED

Room 5 has had an amazing face lift.  To finish off we require some help with lifting heavy shelves and moving them to the garden shed.  We would also appreciate some help with taking the curtains out of Room 6 before it is relocated and putting these into Room 5.  If you have some spare time please contact Lisa and she can make arrangements with you about when this can happen.

ROUND THE VINES - MARTINBOROUGH

The fun walk/run will be held this year on 18 March.  There are brochures in the office.

FRIENDS OF ST MARY’S AGM

This is to be held on 13 March. We would love anybody who would like to help out with fundraising, help out at school events, who is interested in the maintenance and wellbeing of the school to come along to our meetings which are held on the second Tuesday of the month.  We are also looking to fill the officer positions if anyone is interested: President, Treasurer, Secretary, Grants Officer. (We especially need a Treasurer). If you have any queries, you can talk to members of the committee (Maria Tankersley is our current President, Secretary is Lee Tanner), or Mrs O or just come along to the meeting.

  • · Midwinter Xmas dinner
  • · Masquerade Ball

HELP Please!!

The long jump pit needs edging with timber: would anyone like to volunteer? Please see Lisa in the office if you think you can do it.

As a result of emptying Room 5 a few things are now available on Trade me: 2 unicycles (Buy Now $45) and 3 Rimu teachers’ desks (which can be viewed in Room 5 if anyone is interested (reserve $100). The auctions are through leeleet and close this Friday (17th) and Saturday.

Newsletter 09 Feb 2012

09 February 2012

Another week of four seasons! Our senior classes are having difficulty dodging showers when going to the Carterton Pool.

We expect all children to go swimming unless we have been contacted by a parent. It is an important part of our curriculum.

MUFTI DAY

We will be having a mufti day on Friday 17 February. It will be a gold coin donation with money going to our sister school (St Theresa’s) in Featherston. They have to raise money to paint/upgrade Room 6 when it is moved on site in March. I’m sure they would do the same for us if we were in their situation. We are going to use house colours for sports etc. so we would like children to dress in their house colours and instead of assembly on the 17th there will be tabloid sports organised by the seniors.

A BIG THANK YOU to:

Lee Tanner & Lisa Donaldson who have been giving up their time to sort and throw out 20 years of outdated resources etc. from Room 5. We hope to use Room 5 for assemblies and some storage.

TOPIC FOR TERM 1

Our theme for this term is “Spark a Response”. We will be using the areas of Enviro, Stewardship, Easter Story, Response and Spark of God for our study.

PLEASE PLEASE

Make sure your child’s uniform is named. With swimming season children are changing at school and it is difficult to find a polo shirt when you have half a dozen size 8 shirts that all look exactly the same. Please check that your child hasn’t taken Lewis Palmer’s named shirt home by mistake.

I suggest the best way to name a shirt is to use Vivid or a Sharpie straight on the garment.

PARENT SURVEYS

A huge thanks to everyone who completed and returned the Community Survey.  We had a return rate of 45%, which is great.  It was fantastic to see the amount of care and thought that had been put into the responses and suggestions.

We’re currently analysing the data, which will provide us with a clear picture of what you want for your children for school.

CONTACTS INFO

If you are coming into school in the morning could you please stop by the office and check with Lisa that all of you telephone numbers and address details are recorded correctly in our system.  We changed our Student Management computer system last year and we just want to check that all of the information has moved across correctly.  This would also be a good time to check who we have listed as emergency contacts for your children.  If we cannot reach you in an emergency we need to have another adult we can contact instead.

NEWSLETTER BY EMAIL

Thank you to everyone who has opted for email only newsletters.  This helps keep our paper and copying costs down and saves trees and rubbish too.  Please email Lisa from the address you would like the newsletter delivered to if you wish to take this option.

Newlsetter 02 Feb 2012

Dear Parents, Caregivers, Family and Friends, wwelcome back everyone.

We especially welcome the new comers to our school.

Solomon Tuia                       Rangimarie

Tsar Vainu                            Mahaki

Tasha Forest                         Aroha

Logan Tuia                            Aroha

Mrs Helen Robertson          Aroha

I’m sure they will enjoy being at St Mary’s and we are looking forward to getting to know them and their families.

SUNSMART

Please make sure that your child has a school hat.

We do not allow children to play in the playground without one. We expect you to supple sunscreen for your child before school and we will provide a top up at lunchtime.

LUNCHES

As we did last year we encourage students to have wrapper free lunches. Paper rubbish and left over food scraps except for fruit core and skins are put in bags and taken home. This helps you to check what your child is eating. Teachers check lunch boxes to make sure children are eating at lunchtime.

Lunch orders from ISTANBUL will be continued on Fridays. Please place money in a named envelope with your order written on the outside.  If you have misplaced your lists there are spares available at the office.

SCHOOL POOL

This will be open for lessons and lunchtime swims. Aroha (Room1) and Mahaki (Room 2) will have daily lessons at school.

As well as lunchtime swims, Rangimarie and Tikanga will have lessons at the Carterton pool on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 11am until 7 March.

ROOM 6

Later this term the Room 6 building is going to be relocated to St Theresa’s in Featherston. They have been struggling for some time with lack of space for the number of children they have there. At the same time, Catholic Education Board advised us that they will provide us with money to landscape behind Rooms 3 & 4. We are hoping to develop an indoor-outdoor learning area.

INFORMATION EVENING Thursday 9 February.

Mahaki (Room 2) 6.00pm – Eleanor Hautler

Rangimarie (Room 4) 6.30pm – Willy Jephson

Tikanga (Room 3) 7.00pm – Amber Gray

As there are only a handful of children in Aroha, Helen Robertson will be available outside class times to answer questions.

Teachers will be running through their programmes and expectations. They are happy to answer questions.

NB: This is not a time for interviews about individual children. If you wish to discuss your child with a teacher please make an appointment for another time.
